Is generic finasteride effective ?

Propecia, or the generic Finasteride, is currently one of two, FDA cleared, treatments for male pattern baldness. ... By reducing and stopping the production of DHT in your body, you can slow down and halt the effects of male pattern baldness. For the treatment to be effective, it must be taken every single day.
Hair loss is a condition that affects up to two-thirds of males in America. The most common type of hair loss among men is Androgenic Alopecia, or otherwise known as Male Pattern Baldness. Thankfully there is medication available to slow, stop and in some cases even reverse this condition.
Propecia, or the generic Finasteride, is currently one of two, FDA cleared, treatments for male pattern baldness. This medication classifies as a 5 alpha-reductase inducer; it inhibits the production of 5 alpha-reductase enzymes in your body. This enzyme is responsible for converting testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone). By reducing and stopping the production of DHT in your body, you can slow down and halt the effects of male pattern baldness. For the treatment to be effective, it must be taken every single day. If you stop taking the medication for any reason, then the hair loss will resume.
Propecia is the brand name drug developed by Merck. It was first manufactured back in 1997 when the 1mg dosage got approved for the specific treatment for male pattern baldness. Besides being able to manage this condition, the drug does come with possible side effects such as a loss of libido.
Many years later, in January 2013, the generic alternative to Propecia was finally developed, and FDA cleared. Finasteride has the same dosage of the active ingredient (1mg finasteride) as Propecia, and it is profitably sold at a lower price because the medication doesn’t have an advertising budget like the name brand drug.
If you can’t decide on whether to take the name brand or the generic, there are only two fundamental differences that you should affect your decision. Like I mentioned earlier, you will be able to get the generic Finasteride at a lower price. It’s not a massive saving per bottle, but since this drug needs to be taken every day to be effective, the savings can add up over the long run.
Another critical difference is the inactive ingredients used by the manufacturers; the inactive ingredients is what binds the tablet together. Everybody is different, and patients may break down these inactive ingredients differently. This difference in the break down of the inactive ingredients may affect the overall effectiveness of the medication. There have been cases of patients noticing a difference in their symptoms when they change from the name brand to the generic, and vice versa.
Usually, when you ask someone the reason they choose the generic over the name brand, they’ll tell you it is because it merely saves them money. This theory can indeed be correct for people taking medication to prevent male pattern baldness. It’s always best to know what options are available for you, and everyone is different, so what works for other people may not necessarily work for you.
